Extremes
If you think the world is getting more extreme, you're right. A big part of that is our ability to observe more of the world through satellite, high powered specialty cameras, internet, social media, and more.
Extreme weather on the other side of the world didn't used to seem so devastating because we were not able to get the same scope of media coverage and images in real time. Even 10 or 20 years ago, if something extreme happened across the globe, we would only get access to a small amount of information after the fact. Beyond that, we wouldn't even hear about many major events that today we would have no problem accessing.

The Multi-faceted Economy
We must envision multiple sides of the economy when we weigh our decisions and consider wealth. Money is not the only form of currency we deal in. Love, friendship, favors, barter, smiles, beauty, strength, references, referrals, introductions, information, health, and a million more.
We are all rich in one way or another. Generally, we are rich in ways that are important to us individually because we are attracted to things that feel good.
Money is a beautiful tool, and capitalism is an excellent system to be a part of. The power of money stems from the fact that it can be traded for almost anything in the world (as long as you have enough of it). It can be transferred to people we've never met in places we've never been to. I don't have to know who you are to want your money.
Favors are something that require more intimacy between the participants. Owing someone a favor implies that 1) you're anticipating that you'll be meeting with them again 2) that you previously knew them 3) they already did something that benefitted you. It's a beautiful thing.

Are the Heat about to run off a big winning streak?
On Thursday, Miami took down the 2 time defending champs snapping the Lakers' 8 game winning streak and their own 5 game losing streak. A seismic shift like this sometimes leads to aftershocks. In their first game since that big win, El Heat is currently leading Memphis 55-37 at the half with all 3 $100,000,000 men tied for the team lead with 14 points each.
This is an indication that the team might be over their previous dynamics problem. It makes perfect sense to give Bosh an equally prominent role in the offense to match his equal paycheck. That was supposed to be the plan all along, right?
Miami is in the middle of facing a gauntlet of some of the toughest teams in the league (Lakers, Grizzlies, Spurs, Thunder, Hawks, Nuggets; 213-113 combined record). If they can ride the rebound effect of beating the Lakers and can win these six (the Spurs and thunder are obviously the biggest threat of these) they will face a soft 9 game stretch (Pistons, 76ers, Rockets, Cavs, Wizards, Timberwolves, Nets, Bucks, and Bobcats; 233-375 combined)
I'm going to say that they'll probably win 12 of these 15, but it is not beyond the possibility that they might run off as many as 15 straight wins. That's my prediction.

The Revenge Game
The Miami Heat killed the Cleveland Cavaliers. They killed their hopes that they might still be competitive without LeBron James. They killed their spirit and have since lost 30 of their past 31 games. Imagine that. One of the most hyped up regular season games in a long time ended with the (previously) struggling Heat crushing the Cavs 118-90 behind 38 points from LeBron including a back breaking 24 in the third quarter.
This was a major turning point in the seasons of both teams. The Heat finally clicked as a team that night and won 19 of 20 games while the Cavs have lost 29 of their past 30 games. Ouch.
So what's the point? The point is that obviously the Heat are going to win again. Probably. But Cleveland will most likely cover the 17.5 point spread. They just got their big 3 back together and are starting to win again after hitting a rough patch. However, they're probably looking at the Cavs as a fluff game and might be looking ahead at their tough run against Orlando, Charlotte, and the Blake Griffins in a three game in four night set next week.
This is the only chance that Cleveland has to salvage the season. Well, their pride anyway. This game is wayyy more important to Cleveland, so look for them to come out early with a lot of energy and possibly an early lead and try to get revenge. Look for them to fight the entire game and keep it close in the end. Cleveland has a semi-secret threat in rookie Manny Harris who had a breakout game in a rare start last game. He led the team with 20 points against Orlando on 7-12 shooting.

Basketball simplified.
Clear your mind of everything you think you know about basketball.
Now think:
This is an easy game.
It is a team game.
Make your teammates better.
Short shots are better.
Get in athletic position.
Play good defense.
Put a hand in front of the shooter's eyes so he can't see the hoop.
Deny a good player from getting the ball.
Allow a bad player to shoot.
Get the rebound.
Control the game - don't let the game control you.
Jump as high as you can.
Shoot freethrows expecting to make each one.
Practice Layups.
Move without the ball.
Make good passes.
Play to your strengths.
And most importantly, always follow through directly at your target.

Lakers over the Mavs in Dallas - The power of the streaks
Dallas has been a very streaky team over the past 2 months. They won 17 out of 18 with a healthy Dirk Nowitzki before losing three straight as soon as Dirk was out of the lineup. They won two easy games before losing their past 6 games. The good news is that the 7 foot scorer is back and put up 32 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists in a loss at Detroit. As they head back to Dallas, the team's outlook will be more hopeful because they've seen that Dirk is back. They're going to try to come together for a tough home game.
The Lakers recovered from their anomalous loss against the Clippers (which I predicted) with a solid win against the Thunder. With 8 wins in their last 9 games, the Lakers are on a steadily victorious march. Having played tough teams in back to back games, the Lakers will be up to the challenge that Dirk and co. will provide.
This is going to be a back and forth battle, but the Lakers will have the edge and win at the end because they have experienced the feeling of winning so much lately. The last time Dirk tasted victory standing on the court was December 21. On a positive note for the Mavericks, the Lakers will elevate the Mavs' level of play as they face a strong Bulls team in Chicago Thursday night.

Blake Griffin is a Monster!
After the Clippers beat the Lakers last night, I felt compelled to start a blog focused on the monster that is Blake Griffin. Today, right now, I'm watching the Clippers take on the Pacers and Griffin has 30 points and 8 rebounds with 10:41 left in the 3rd quarter. He's on pace to score over 50 points the game after he scored only 2 in the first quarter against the Lakers.
The Lakers game will be an inflection point in the meteoric rise of Blake Griffin's career.
Sidenote, Blake grabbed his 10th rebound at about the 9:30 mark adding to his record streak of double-doubles by a rookie.
The Lakers were well aware of what Blake Griffin was about when the game started last night. For most of the first half, the Lakers had their way with him and he old managed one basket (a sweet dunk of course). After starting the second half slowly, he got out on a fast break and started licking his chops as he looked to throw down a monster dunk over little Derek Fisher. The veteran Fisher knew this so he put Griffin on his ass. Blake picked himself up, brushed himself off, hit the free throws, then "punked" the Lakers according to Kobe himself. The lesson: don't wake a sleeping dragon.
Then Lamar Odom decided to grab his Jersey and try to throw him around, but Blake is too big and he just walked away. Barron Davis and his teammates jumped in to defend Griffin.
With about ten minutes left in the game, there are some interesting stats to look at. It's a close game at 88-88. Griffin has 36 points and 12 rebounds. Barron Davis has 11 assists, Gordon has 23 points, Granger has 29 for the Pacers and Collison has 24 points and 7 assists. The Pacers big shot blocker, Hibbert has been neutralized on the bench with 5 fouls. Griffin is sitting on the bench resting up for a big finish.
Griffin just checked back into the game and got his first touch at 8:07 left in the game. When he entered, they posted on the screen that he's shooting 15-19 today. His energy is contagious, as his team ran off a quick 7 points before Blake his a jump shot off the glass.
At the 5 and a half minute mark, Griffin made a play that shows his tenacity. He took a shot, missed, got to the other side of the glass to attempt a tip, grabbed the loose ball, and fought his way up to make a little hook shot and finished off the 3 point play for his 41st point with 14 rebounds.
At the 2 minute mark, the announcers start to worry as they question the coach's decision to not take another timeout. He lets them play because they already know the strategy: Give the ball to Blake Griffin and let him do what he does. They do and he backs his man down and scores on a tough little jump hook. The lead is back up to 5.
With a nice move he scored to put his team up 114-107 and score his 47th point, the most in the league all year. As the clock runs down with the game in hand, the Clippers fans stand and cheer for a team that is truly deserving. 47 points and 14 rebounds with plenty of highlights.
Blake gets the post game interview and he does a great job giving plenty of praise to his team and teammates. Everyone else is starting to talk about him so there's little reason to him to talk about himself.

Friday Triple Play
Chicago has been playing poorly on the road recently, but that will likely end on Friday when they play the Pacers. Carlos Boozer called his team out for starting slowly, so look for them to jump out to an early lead. Indiana is trying to win its 3rd straight game for the first time in a long time, but it's probably not going to happen against the division leading Bulls whom are 8 games up in the standings.
Charlotte will give the Celtics a tough game in Boston, and they might even beat them. The Bobcats are coming into the game riding a 4 game winning streak including knocking off the Bulls in their last game. The Celtics are still vulnerable on defense without Garnett in the lineup. KG practiced with the team finally, but won't be playing in Friday's game. Boston has been giving up 2.7 more points per game at home this year than on the road coupled with the absence of Garnet will allow the surging Bobcats a chance to win.
Coming off a huge win over the Miami Heat, look for the Clippers to take down the Warriors in Oakland. The Blake Griffin show will be in its full glory against the run and gun offense of Golden State. The Clippers just took down the Warriors on January 9th 105-91 and since they're still firing on all cylinders, it looks like Los Angeles is poised to win their 9th game in 12 chances.

Durant off to a hot start
Embracing the national spotlight, Kevin Durant has started 8 of 9 from the field for 21 points in the first half for a 64-60 lead at halftime. Expect KD to finish with at least 40 in this high scoring game combined with his hot start.

My prediction of the Clippers upsetting the Heat
The Clippers have won 7 out of their last 10 after starting out 5-21, showing the dawning of a new era for the historically pathetic Clippers. Blake Griffin has been a beast, finishing with a double-double in each of his past 23 games. Beyond that, he’s been getting better and better each month of the season. In October, he averaged 16.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. November, he averaged 20.9, 11.7, & 2.7, December, 23.0, 13.5, & 3.9, and January, 25.3, 15, and 4.3. Beast. Beyond that, his numbers are better at home by 4 points per game and he dishes out 1.3 more assists per home contest. He also seems to rise to the occasion against the better teams averaging 30.3 ppg against Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Orlando, and Utah. In simpler terms, watch out for Blake Griffin. Eric Gordon has been a consistent force for the Clippers averaging 23.5 and 4.4 dimes while being aggressive at the end of games. Also, Barron Davis is playing happy finally and it has shown in his production.
The Heat have won 9 in a row and 21 of their last 22 games, including 13 straight on the road since LeBron’s intense Cleveland homecoming. There have been many big games by Wade (40, 45 pts) and James (38, 44 points) recently which could be bad news for LA. However, in Miami’s last 2 games, both on the road, relatively weak teams (Bucks and Blazers) forced overtime. The Heat seem to be feeding off the energy of the crowds when they play on the road. The fanfare led James to dub his posse the Heatles because they sell out arenas like the Beatles did.
The only sure thing about this game is that it will be fun to watch. Expect both teams to be up for the challenge under the bright lights of Los Angeles. Expect a star-studded crowd to rival the Lakers’ games, and don’t be surprised if the Clippers rise to the occasion and take down the Heat or at least cover the spread.

A sports team run by the fans: Fanagers (get it?)
It appears that John Elway has taken the Broncos up a notch already. He moved them into the 21st century by Twittering inside information about the organization.
By doing so, he has opened up the possibility of a group of fans running a sports team. Imagine a system where the head coaches were interviewed live on the internet to be seen by fans and then the manager was chosen through a fan vote (social security numbers linked to personal Fanager account so there wouldn't be rampant voter fraud). Or, selecting the design for special uniform nights like throwback night. Or even what the batting order should be or when to pull the pitcher. I'd love to be a fanager, I'm sure The Sports Guy would love to have a say, and I bet you would too.

Rockets to upset Celtics
The Rockets almost ended their 4 game losing streak against the Jazz on Friday as they were pushed to overtime at home. After being up 86-78 with almost 4 minutes to go, they only managed to eek out 3 more points the rest of the way on free throws. This is likely to lead to two possibilities depending on how the Rockets interpret the loss. If they take from it the feeling of being in the lead for most of the game, and that next time they'll finish things right, they're going to beat the Celtics in Boston on Monday. If they take from it the disappointment of giving up that lead in the final minutes, they will get completely crushed by a Boston team that just took a beating from Derrick Rose and the Bulls.
The Celtics have been going through some ups and downs lately for a number of reasons, so they're beatable. It could be easy for the Celtics to overlook the Rockets at this moment since they're beginning a 6 game home streak against the likes of Houston, Sacramento, and Charlotte (37-67 combined). Rondo took more shots Saturday than any other game since his return (14) and had "just" 8 assists. Look for him to get his teammates into the game more (12-15 assists).
If you want to try to pick an upset, this has a good chance of going down. After getting a taste of potential victory, the Rockets should be hungry to go for the kill against the favored Celtics.
Update: nailed it. 108-102 Houston wins. Rondo 12 assists, 8 shots.

Thunder to reign over limping Mavs
The Mavericks' offense has taken some major knocks recently with injuries to Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler. That's almost 40 points per game that they're going to have to find somewhere else. Expect more production from Jason Terry in his third game as a starter after getting in a groove with 18 points in each of the last 2 games.
Look for the young Thunder to smell blood from the start as they try to end a 2 game losing streak. You can't keep Kevin Durant down for long, so expect him to start strong after a couple rough shooting nights (18-39). Westbrook has shown a killer attitude this year and I expect that he'll rise to the occasion of the nationally televised game especially after scoring 28 on Tuesday.
Dallas probably won't be able to match up with the Thunder tonight, so expect a big road smackdown from OKC.

Look for a high scoring game Boson v Spurs
In last night’s game against the Knicks, the Spurs gave up 128 points and scored 115 themselves for a total of 243. These are not the Spurs that you have grown to known. They are an efficient offensive team (4th - 105.9 ppg) who can score points and play average defense (15th – 97.6 ppg). They are coming off a game where they couldn’t figure it out defensively which will likely carry over into tonight’s game against the Celtics.
The Celtics are the best defensive team in the league this year, but Kevin Garnett is out with a right leg injury for the next week. Also, the Celtic’s offensive engine has come back in the form of Rondo at point guard. Last game he was passing up layups to get the ball to his teammates. He is hungry for assists like few point guards in the league (look for 15-20 assists tonight). Look for Pierce to shoot more tonight (Doc told him to straight up) and score 30+ (40?). With Rondo in and Garnett out, we are almost certain to see a more offensive and less defensive game.
This game could go either way very easily when it comes to wins and losses, but expect to see 210+ points scored.

Kevin Love
He's a rebounding machine. Earlier this year, he had a game where he scored 30 points and grabbed 30 rebounds. It was the first time since Moses Malone in 1980. Before tonight's game, Celtics coach Doc was questioned about that 30 rebound game and he said that if they don't put bodies on him, he will get a lot of rebounds.
Love has 19 rebounds now with 2:03 left in the game. Can he get 30 again? He's fallen off the pace this quarter, but the game remains close which will make his totals likely rise.
On the other side of the floor, rondo has 13 assists and barely wants to shoot to a ridiculous degree. Both of these totals will rise greatly in the 4th. The wolves are up 71-66 now, so an overtime period wouldn't be surprising. I predict 25 rebounds and 18 assists, or 30 & 20 with ot.
